Big Day for Better Health in New Jersey
January 10, 2006

After many years, the New Jersey Legislature has finally passed a bill banning indoor smoking in restaurants and bars (except casinos - after all, this is New Jersey). This is a great day for the health of the citizens of New Jersey. The Governor, Assembly and Senate deserve praise for siding with the people of the state over the narrow interests of big tobacco, restaurant and bar owners…even though smoking bans have not hurt restaurants and bars in other jurisdictions, they continued to try and make this specious case until the final vote. Fortunately, this time their blocking efforts failed.

I am also proud of the role that MWW Group played in this battle along with its client, NJ Breathes. For more than a decade, MWW Group has been at the forefront of tobacco cessation campaigns and health advocacy work. The dedication of my team and many others who led this fight has finally paid off... Congratulations!

My response to your approval of stomping on the Constitution is here:

Scott:

Far from stomping on the Constitution, this legislation protects the rights of the people against the egregious actions of big tobacco including their years of lies, manipulation and use of massive campaign contributions to work against the majority of public. The health rights of millions needs to trump the selfish need for pleasure by a minority of citizens. In fact, with this legislation, the people have spoken and their long delayed will has been carried out. Remember, smoking will not be banned in New Jersey...peoples will still maintain their right to poison themselves and their children by smoking in their homes, cars, outdoors, etc.
