When All Else Fails, the Republicans Decide It's Time To Bash Gays Again
May 19, 2006

Let's see...the Republican Congress blocks all talk about the war in Iraq, they are powerless to do anything about Iran, they offer no plan for energy independence and make excuses about illegal domestic spying...so, what's left to talk about? How about some good, old fashioned gay bashing?

With everything around them in free fall, what is the Republican strategy for mobilizing their base?...looks like it's time for them to play politics with the lives of millions of Americans by launching yet another run at gay marriage...and if that wasn't bad enough...now they even want to play with the Constitution. How do they look at themselves in the mirror at night?...they should be ashamed of themselves.

The political system in this country needs a serious overhaul. We live under the false impression that America is a democracy and that we the people actually have a say in what our government does. Truth be told, we live in a republic ruled by a handful of upperclass politicians who are so disconnected with the people they represent, all they can do is try and secure re-election based on how much money they can throw into their campaigns. I think that this display is the perfect example of that.

The people in this country don't think that gay marriage is as much of an issue as invading foreign countries, the rising body count of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, or our dependence on foreign oil. Opponents of so much foreign policy argue that the government should focus on domestic issues. But when it does, it's not the unbearable cost of healthcare or the lack of a public preschool system that gets the attention, it's gay marriage--a hot button issue for political gain and re-election votes. If this country were truly about freedom, then why does it matter if two people who want to get married are of the same sex? It's freedom, not idealism or theocracy. Since when do Christian values dictate the laws that are passed? Last I checked, there was this thing in the Constitution called separation of church and state. So what's the secular reason for banning gay marriage? There is none. Bush and his cronies are hypcocrites for coming down hard on Islamic nations who don't embrace democracy, when in their own country, they let their religious beliefs affect the law.

I do not believe in organized religion. But at least I have respect for those who do; I would never tell someone how they should think in what they should believe. So, I ask Bush and all of his like-minded followers, what are you so afraid of? What will gay marriage do to you and your family? Nothing. So get over it already and do something useful, like making sure every kid in this country has the food, shelter and education they need.
