Mel Gibson: Can You Rehab Bigotry and Ignorance?
August 02, 2006

So, Mel Gibson has decided to enter rehab for his drinking problem…but, where does he go to cure his anti-Semitism, bigotry, and exploitation of his religious followers? The cynic in me has to question his real motivation for entering rehab…is it really to cure his boozing or is it to stem the tide of his public relations disaster? I think it’s pretty clear…his Hollywood star is about to extinguish…and he is now willing to do anything to try and once again sweep his repulsive views under the rug.

Richard Klein of Riverside Public Relations and Paul Holmes of the Holmes Report both make compelling arguments about the appropriate role of public relations in representing hate mongers like Mel Gibson...they make the case that everyone does not deserve representation. I want to be clear that it is not my intent to impose my morality on others...and I'm sure that many have a legitimate difference of opinion on the issues I support and the positions I take....honest disagreement is healthy...controversial people, organizations and opinions are fine and everyone is entitled to their point of view...but hate is hate....it's black and white...and public relations professionals and firms need to draw the line in who and what they represent.

Does a 12-step program exist for bigotry? My opinion is that the drunk driving and disregard for others needs to be highlighted just as much as his heinous comments. My post this morning on www.numbersareyourfriends.com discusses the issue as well.
